Book Reviews

»A remarkable book! In turn, heartbreaking and hilarious. It captures the joy and pain of people discovering their true identity. Dr. Ettner manages the difficult task of making us empathize—rather than sympathize—with these special people.«
Tim Kazurinsky, »Saturday Night Live,« screenwriter of About Last Night.

»This book is riveting; you will feel pulled in and amazed. You will sit invisible next to Dr. Ettner as she listens to the fears and hopes of the various men and women who experience transsexualism. Page by page, Dr. Ettner’s immediate and warm style demystifies a taboo subject. For those of us who have not known the struggle of being trapped inside the wrong body, this book is a powerful awakening, and an amazing journey.«
Professor Anne Calcagno, De Paul University, author of Pray for Yourself, winner of the James D. Phelan and National Endowment for the Art adwards.

»Confessions of a Gender Defender is intimate, it’s real, and it’s alive. A fascinating journey with a woman of rare insight.«
Kim Elizabeth Stuart, author of The Uninvited Dilemma.

»Simultaneously hilarious and tear-jerking. Dr. Ettner, a kind of upscale Mother Theresa to the transgendered, enlightens us about what really causes people to suddenly change sex at age forty—and how we should react to it. A must read for therapists, transgenderists, talk show watchers, and any culturally cool person of the 1990s.«
Martine Rothblatt, Bioethics Committee, International bar Association, author of The Apartheid of Sex: A Manifesto on the Freedom of Gender.

»This deeply sensitive book proves that Randi Ettner is one of the most knowledgeable and talented clinical psychologists working in the transgendered field in the United States today.«
Eugene A. Schrang, M.D., plastic and sex-reassignment surgeon.
